LAKOTA TOMAHAWKS YOUTH FOOTBALL CHEER RULES AND GUIDELINES 2018

I. MEMBERSHIP:

A. Membership is open to Kindergarten through 6th grade girls and boys who reside in the Lakota school district.  Proof of residency may be requested.  Registration opens approximately mid-January each year and runs through June 1st.

B. Fees for new and returning cheerleaders - $200 (includes a $60 fundraising fee that goes to the Tomahawks Organization). All cheerleaders receive a custom fitted uniform with vest, skirt, body liner, spankies, shoes, poms, cheer clinic t-shirt.

C. Priority Registration by March 1,2018 will receive a discounted registration fee of $189

               D. Sibling discount of $25 will be offered this year

               E. Late registrations are subject to a late fee of $30 if registering after May 1st.

F. Team Fees will vary from team to team, but may include the costs for the following items: bags, bows, socks, water bottles, end of year gifts/trophies, banquet, spirit gifts/treats, poster board for signs, banners, game day snacks/drinks, etc.

G. Registration fees must be paid in full by June 1st, 2018.  Uniforms will not be ordered if registration fees are not paid in full by this date.  Team Fees must be paid in full before the first game and before a uniform can be distributed. Team fees are determined by each coach.

                H. Lakota Tomahawks Youth Cheerleaders must:

            a. Be willing to commit to attend ALL practices and games.

           b. Be willing to commit to high standards of character.

            c. Be willing to commit to using his/her best efforts in school.

 

II. SQUAD PLACEMENT

a. Girls will be placed on squads within their grade level. The only exception to this rule is that a child can cheer up or down by 1- 2 years, but only if they have a sibling (sibling can be a football player or cheerleader) on that team.

               b. Squads are determined by number of football teams.

               c. All cheer placements on squads are final for the season.

 

III. ATTENDANCE

a. Practice, game and event attendance is mandatory.  Your squad depends on you as a part of their team!

b. If any particular event is optional or voluntary, your coach will notify you of the option to participate.  However, once a commitment is made to participate, any additional practices as well as attendance at the event become mandatory.  

c. All cheerleaders must be at the field 30-45 minutes prior to the game, as per the coach’s instruction.  If late, she/he will not be permitted to perform during the first quarter and must sit on the bench.

 

IV. ABSENCES

a. Except for unforeseen illnesses, coaches must be notified of an absence prior to the day of the event in order to be excused.

b. Situations needing special consideration for an absence will be dealt with on an individual basis.

c. Cheerleaders leaving an event or game early may only leave after halftime to avoid being counted absent.  More than two early departures after halftime will be considered an unexcused absence from a game.

d. A cheerleader may be asked to sit out for portions of the game and during half-time, if she/he has not been present to learn new material.

e. More than two unexcused absences from games may result in suspension from the squad.

f. Absences due to weather conditions will not be excused.  

 

V. PRACTICES:

a. Each cheerleader is expected to attend ALL practices.  All practices are mandatory unless a cheerleader is ill or has a religious/academic obligation.  In the event a practice must be missed, the Coach should be notified as soon as practically possible. It is important to be on time to practice.  Missed practices and not being on time to practice may result in non-participation during parts of games.   

b. Cheerleaders should wear appropriate clothing and shoes to practice.  Athletic shoes, socks, t-shirt and shorts are appropriate. Girls wearing flip-flops or jeans to practice will sit out.  Athletic or cheer shoes and stretchable clothing are very important. 

c. Cheerleaders should come to practice prepared and ready to learn.  There is a limited amount of time and a lot of things to work on.  Coaches will supply parents and cheerleaders with information regarding appropriate behavior during practice and games.   

d. Coaches will determine all practice times and locations.

e. Do not drop off your child at practice until a coach has arrived. No child will be released to anyone other than a parent or a previously designated adult.

f. Practice time regulations: K1, 2nd, and 3rd grade level cheerleaders may practice a maximum of one day per week during the school months. Each practice shall not exceed 1 hour in length from the scheduled start time.  4th, 5th, and 6th grade cheerleaders may practice a maximum of two days per week during the school months. Each practice shall not exceed 2 hours in length from the scheduled start time.

g. During the summer months, K1, 2nd, and 3rd grade level cheerleaders may practice a maximum of two days per week, each practice not to exceed 1 ½  hours in length from the scheduled start time.  4th  through 6th grade cheerleaders may practice a maximum of three days per week during the summer months, each practice not to exceed 1 ½  hours in length from the scheduled start time.

h. A Coach may set extra practices as needed, but must not exceed the maximum hours as indicated above.

i. Practices may be canceled at the Coach’s discretion, for weather, school events or any other reason the Coach deems appropriate. 

 

VI. GAMES:       

a. Cheerleaders need to be at the football field 30-45 minutes before each game (Coaches will set times).  This allows the squad to find each other and do some warm up stretches before going on the field.  If a cheerleader is going to be absent, the Coach needs to be notified the day before the game. 

b. Each cheerleader should be in full uniform to cheer.  Full uniform includes:  cheer shell top, body liner (sleeves), cheer skirt, briefs, cheer, game socks, and cheer bow.   Uniformity is important!  If cheerleader is not in complete uniform, she will not perform at half time.  For cooler weather, uniform jacket and black leggings are suggested.  Other cheer accessories such as ear-warmers and gloves will be determined by the Coach. 

c. Each cheerleader should wear her hair up and securely off her face.   Although, specific hairstyle is not typically required by the coach, she is required to wear her cheer bow in her hair.

d. Cheerleaders should be ready to cheer and pay attention to the game.  Between cheers each cheerleader is expected to stand at attention with her hands behind her back, facing the field to watch the game. 

e. Each cheerleader is expected to cheer a full game unless she becomes sick.  

f. Cheerleaders should bring their own water bottle to each game. 

g. Girls should eat before they arrive so they are not hungry during the game.  Snacks are not permitted on the track/field.

h. If a cheerleader should become ill, she will be sent to her parents so she can get the necessary attention.

i. If a cheerleader should need to use the restroom, she may be asked to wait for a break in the game or for a group trip to the restroom with a coach (if on the younger squads).  In the case of an emergency situation, parents may be asked to assist to meet the immediate needs of a cheerleader.  

j. No gum or candy is allowed.

k. Playoff games are not a part of the regular game schedule.  Teams and squads will not know their playoff game schedule until the weeks leading up to the playoffs.  Game expectations remain in place despite the inability to plan for these game days/times.  In the event of a scheduling conflict, discussions should take place between parents and Coaches as soon as the conflict is realized. 

 

VII. UNIFORM AND PERSONAL APPEARANCE

a. The official uniform consists of shell top, body liner, skirt, briefs, white no-show socks, game bow, poms and cheer shoes.  

b. Uniform must be kept clean, neat, and in good repair, free of stains and of appropriate fit.

c. ALL CHEERLEADERS MUST ATTEND A UNIFORM FITTING WHICH WILL TAKE PLACE DURING MAY (one date/time) and JUNE (one date/time). DATES WILL BE DETERMINED IN EARLY SPRING AND COMMUNICATED TO PARENTS.

Any conflicts should be communicated to the Cheer Director immediately so that we can make arrangements to have your cheerleader fitted.  These will be the only excused reasons not to attend the fitting and arrangements must be made in advance.  A $25 late fitting fee may be assessed for anyone not excused from fittings.

            d. No gum chewing or candy eating during camp, practices, or games.

 

VIII. EXPECTED BEHAVIOR FOR ALL CHEERLEADERS

a. Listens to instructions.

b. Is cooperative and enthusiastic.

c. Helps and encourages others.

d. Is punctual and maintains a good attendance record.

e. Shows respect for Coaches, instructors, teammates, officials, players, other teams and parents.

f. Uses time productively.

g. Thinks of cheer as a squad effort, rather than an individual performance.

h. Refrains from hurtful comments to or about others and is sensitive to other’s feelings.

i. Exhibits good sportsmanship at all times towards opposing teams, squads and fans.  

 

IX. DISCIPLINE

A. Any cheerleader who fails to comply with any of the rules and regulations is subject to discipline. 

B. Discipline will follow the progressive format:    

1. Verbal warning by the Coach.

2. If the behavior continues following the verbal warning, the cheerleader will be isolated from the group until the behavior is under control.      

3. If the behavior continues, the Coach will make parental contact.    

 

X. ADDITIONAL INFO

A. Cheerleaders are encouraged to wear their cheer uniform to school the Friday before each game to promote school spirit. 

B. Game admission – coaches, cheerleaders and football players get in free when wearing their uniforms.

C. Games are generally 1 hour long although some may go into overtime. 

E. Game schedules are released about a week prior to the first regular season game. 

F. Cheerleaders are allowed to tumble, but can only do so, if they are skilled enough to tumble without ANY assistance whatsoever. Coaches and/or players are not allowed to assist with any tumbling/stunts.

G. Every player/cheerleader must have an Emergency Medical Form and a Concussion form signed by a parent or guardian before the first practice of the season. Coaches must have these forms present at all practices and games.

 

XIGOALS FOR ALL SQUADS: 

A. Shows good spirit and sportsmanship at all times. 

B.  Demonstrates self-discipline and self-control within the squad.

C.  Consistent preparedness and recall of new material.

D.  Tight, strong arms (no spaghetti arms).

E. Good tight fists and sharp movements.

F.  Pointed toes.

G. Good voice projection.

H.  Able to memorize and retain new cheers and routines.

I. Shows good rhythmic ability.

J. Good variety of strong jumps.

K.  FUN IS PARAMOUNT
